Melting Snow Causes Floods in Bosnia

March 13, 201814:59
After the recent snowfall in Bosnia and Herzegovina started to melt quickly, river levels began to rise in the north of the country, causing floods in the towns of Bihac and Cazin.

Several houses were flooded on Tuesday morning in Bihac in northern Bosnia due to the high level of the River Una, following critical flooding in Vilenjaca, a settlement in the town of Cazin, Anadolu news agency reported.

Vilenjaca was completely cut off on Monday due to the amount of water on the road, but the situation is now under control, although people are still reporting water damage, Anadolu’s report said.

“Almost the entire settlement of Priboj [in Bihac] is in danger, at the moment water has entered 30 houses and we are trying to prevent worse damage,” Muharem Kartal, Bosnia’s director of civil defence, told N1 TV on Tuesday.

The towns of Bosanska Krupa, Sanski Most and Kljuc, which are near Bihac, have also suffered flooding.

The road between Kozarska Dubica and Kostajinca, also in northern Bosnia, is closed due to water on the road.

Part of Banja Luka in north-west Bosnia is also flooded, as well as the town of Prijedor, where around 100 houses were flooded when the River Sana reached a level of 484 centimetres.

There is also flooding in the central Croatian town of Kostajnica and Prime Minister Andrej Plenkovic will visit the scene today, media reported, while water levels are rising in other areas of Croatia.
