When the West Indian community raised £1,000 for Bangladesh cyclone victims

On this day in 1989, The Coventry West Indian Community Association presented £1,000 to the Bangladesh appeal.

A devastating cyclone in November 1988 had caused $13million of damaged, and left over 6,000 people dead.

It struck as Bangladesh was recovering from its worst ever floods just months before. The cyclone's two-metre high storm surge hammered the coastline.

There was a huge fundraising effort in Britain and foreign secretary Lord Glenarthur pledged £200,000 to aid agencies.

Eric Linton, Winston Pinnock, George Blake, Arnol Myrie and Jacob Hilton were pictured with the Lord Mayor of Coventry Councillor Arthur Waugh Junior after the West Indian community raised hundreds of pounds.
