A state of emergency in Spain has seen Brits' holidays canned as warning is was issued by UK Foreign Office
Holidaymakers heading to a popular Spanish island have seen their trips cancelled after heavy rain and flooding has caused chaos. The government of the Canary Islands declared a state of emergency after two hours of rainfall saw streets on the island turned into rivers.
Homes and vehicles across the popular holiday isle have been deluged with floodwater. The Foreign Office has issued an urgent warning to those in the area or planning to visit soon.
It said that essential services across the island are still badly affected by the flooding which happened on Saturday, April 12. Some tourists heading off on holiday to Lanzarote have had their holidays cancelled as hotels and roads are impacted.
One disappointed holidaymaker told the Express: "I’ve just had my holiday with Jet2 cancelled as the resorts in Lanzarote are flooded. I’m in the airport. Seems to be affecting a lot of people."
And a couple told that their week-long break on the island was cancelled as they sat in the airport waiting to board their flight.
Jonn and Judi Saunders were at Leeds airport and their bags were on the plane when they received an email informing them that their holiday had been cancelled due to the floods hitting their hotel.
They told the Daily Star they were 'upset' although the full cost of their holiday is to be refunded by the company.
A Jet2holidays spokesperson said: "Due to the severe weather conditions that have affected parts of Lanzarote, we regrettably have had no choice but to cancel a small number of holidays that were due to arrive into hotels that are temporarily closed due to the impact of these adverse conditions."
Local officials declared a state of emergency on Saturday amid the chaos caused by floodwaters. It was in place until 7am on Sunday, April 13.
Locals are dealing with the aftermath of the flooding with residents battling not just the water but also a dreadful sewage stench, stemming from the flood's impact on waste systems.
