No fewer than 20 persons have lost their lives and more than 50,000 houses and farmlands were destroyed following the flood which ravaged some parts of Jigawa State last week.

The Executive Secretary of State Emergency and Management Agency, Yusuf Sani-Babura, disclosed this while giving an update on the disaster on Monday.

He said the flood, which affected no fewer than 17 out of the 27 LGAs of the state, had also displaced many people in most of the affected communities.

“This year’s flood has destroyed more than 50,000 houses and farmlands while the affected farmlands were submerged by water.

“The crops that were washed away in the affected LGAs include maize, millet, guinea corn and rice as a result of a heavy downpour that occurred last week.”

According to him, the affected victims have been temporarily relocated to various schools, mosques and relatives houses.

He said the state governor, Badaru Abubakar, had directed the agency to provide relief materials to the affected communities as an interim measure pending the completion of an assessment report.

He explained that relief materials had been provided to the victims, including foodstuffs, drugs, as well as temporary shelter.
