A magnitude 6.8 earthquake struck off the coast of Guatemala around 6:31 a.m. Thursday (8:31 a.m. EDT), the U.S. Geological Survey reports.

The quake occurred 23.7 km (14.7 miles) southwest of the city of Puerto San José and had a depth of 28 km (28.5 miles).

On Twitter, Guatemalan President Jimmy Morales urged residents to remain calm and said more information would be given soon.

According to the Associated Press, a spokesman for Guatemala’s national disaster agency said there did not appear to be any injuries and the damage appeared to be minor.

Light shaking was felt as far north as the Mexico City of Tuxtla Gutiérrez.

AccuWeather Meteorologist Rob Miller said daily pop-up showers and thunderstorms will be around the area each of the next several days.

"Locally heavy rainfall will be possible from any thunderstorm, which could result in localized flooding," Miller said.
