Timor-Leste: Country Profile

Overview

Timor-Leste is exposed to frequent floods and landslides during the rainy season (November to April) and experiences droughts during the dry season. The 2015 to 2016 El Niño event was particularly severe with an estimated 400,000 people affected by drought conditions across Covalima,
Oecusse, Baucau, Viqueque and Lautem municipalities.

With low crop diversity, any disruption to household food production has an immediate, severe and lasting impact on food security. Annually, nearly two-thirds of the population suffers food shortages for at least two months particularly during the lean season (October to March).
